Well, if you happen to have another machine you could always swap the ribbon cable to eliminate that. Have you also rung out all of the traces from the gi string all the way back to the ribbon cable? (schematics are your best friends for this) Always start with the easy stuff first and work...
I've never come across a bad triac in my travels. It's always been a header / connector pin issue, cold solder, broken trace, bad fuse or holder etc etc etc.

Absolutely upgrade to the latest version, but if I recall (and my memory isn't what it used to be) L5 is not the best revision to run, and I cannot recall why that is.. The preferred versions are L2 or even the P7, and for me I would roll with the P7.

As others have stated above, diluted simple green for the exterior works good.
