Not only can you make it any colour you like but if one of your existing games happens to be next on ColorDMD list of upcoming games it can be re-purposed where as a Blue LED DMD is only going to be just that. The grid lines would also really bother me too so for the same price I would rather get a ColorDMD and run in classic dots mode. Here is a Yellow/Green X-Pin DMD demo and you can see the grid lines.
I think if look at the upscaling as being "different" and a complement to all of the other blue lighting, it looks great in upscaled mode (at least in the youtbe video). Perhaps if you compare it to standard DMD you mght not like it just because its different.
