Cross border machine borrowing

I've (temporarily) given machines to friends over the years, for them to enjoy while I don't have the room. I'm sure many of you have done the same. I have a good friend in the states that I'd like to do the same with, but I have no clue how that would work at the border. If he picks it up and crosses the border with it, would he have to pay tax? How about returning it after a while? Would it make a difference if him or me transport it?

I don't know the US tax code but on the way back to Canada, tax will need to be paid on the value of the item. I got nailed with tax on a Multimorphic demo kit for a pinball show. It was marked as temporary sample for show blah blah blah. Doesn't matter.

Otherwise everyone bringing a game(or any item) across the border would claim it's a temporary loan lol

When you take it across to the US you can stop in customs on the Canadian side and get a certificate on the item so when it comes back they know for certain it originated in Canada. I went to school in the US to play baseball and had to do this when I took random crap across for the year

Ah yeah. Forgot about that. I've done it for past shows like Allentown and Chicago. Keep in mind that the US side doesn't have to accept that. I've had past troubles with them thinking I was trying to sell my shit and using the CBSA certificate as a workaround to paying fees.

Interesting. Wouldn't they charge my friend when he takes it into the US though?

I remember years back in the before times taking a game to Clay's to diagnose and on the way back I had to pay tax on it's value because I didn't get what they called a "Green card" for the item. Of coarse on the way over they never mentioned this being a thing..
