also have you cleaned the opto LED's? They could just be dirty.. remember it needs to send / receive an invisible beam of light. worst case, just buy a new transmitter and receiver LED and solder them in. $1 and you're done. :) Ask any STTNG owner, they'll tell you how much fun Optos can...
