Hey folks

Some unfortunate news. As of a few weeks back, we are no longer a Stern dealer. It was quite the journey from becoming one in April of '24. When I was first brought on, there wasn't a guide or anything so I asked some questions. Mainly, where I can sell and was told no restrictions. I was however, warned when getting onboard that the Canadian distribution scene is very competitive. No problem. Should be plenty of room for one more. Pretty well within a week of opening, I heard from my sales rep of a complaint from a fellow Canadian distributor. So it begins! We started off selling online, but as sales picked up and trades started coming in, we started to look for a standalone location.

I would hear regularly of complaints from, get this, never a customer, but rather other Canadian distributors. Why they care about other distributor complaints is beyond me. If I ran the company, I would care what customers thought, to which I heard overwhelming positive feedback (and a breath of fresh air compared to the competitors). These complaints continued. I would get numerous calls from my reps saying they're getting complaints about me breaking rules, despite having any proof. As I was going down to pick up my X-Men machines in October, I was 30 minutes from Chicago (of my 7h drive) when I get a call from my rep and I'm told I'm not allowed to get them because of complaints from other distributors. I was told I can't have them until theirs are ready to be shipped, so I had to leave Chicago empty handed and come back the following week to get them once I get the word, even though I had numerous launch parties depending on me. After a long week of driving and many, many, deliveries we got through it and got everyone their machines with smiles. No apology, compensation or otherwise for the inconvenience.

Before committing to my lease and standalone location, I asked my sales rep how things we're going. I was told I'm doing exceptionally well for a new dealer, am doing amazing things for the pinball community and Stern is behind me 100%. Awesome. let's do this. We had an amazing grand opening with over 225 people coming out. I heard it resonated through Stern and they were all very excited about it.

Complaints continued and escalated once a competitor learned of me shipping machines all over Canada and being able to do it more competitively while still following Stern's pricing guidelines. I then get the call from the head of sales that they brought me on too soon and it started affecting the market, and that I'm no longer an authorized dealer. Would have been nice to know this before getting a dedicated place and spending many tens of thousands of dollars.

I believe I was a victim of my own success and ruffled too many feathers of the old boys club. I was told that my sales reps 'defended me' numerous times in higher up meetings. Defended me against what you ask? good question. Likely more absurd, unfounded complaints.

I sold ~110 new machines in ~10 months. My rough, back of the napkin math suggests that's 20-25% of the Canadian market share, but I can't be certain. It was a very fun 10 months! I met a lot of cool people. Thank you all for the experiences and support along the way!

As of now, I still have some new product in stock and quite a few good quality used machines. If anyone is looking at a larger buy, let me know and we can work something out.

There's plenty more I could share, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Thanks to you all.

Jeff

This is something that puzzles me completely.

In these times, as a consumer, it was very refreshing having multiple options, distributors were starting to be more competitive in what they were offering the customers and that is a big positive.

Old Distros might have gotten used to the COVID times of I don't care cause I'm going to sell out regardless.

I can say that from personal experience the level of communication, turn around time in emails or text was far superior for Mana vs any other distros I had dealt with.

Shame on Stern for doing this and giving in to the bullying systems, there is too much of that going on these days, I guess pinball is no different.

Thanks Jeff for all the effort you have gone for all my NiB purchases. You have always been awesome to deal with and could tell you were passionate.

This is a Huge lost for the Canadian pinball distribution and competition market.

Pretty sad. Stern is more focused on price fixing than customers

Hopefully they come to their senses. I haven't purchased a game from you before, but I spoke to you at Pinfest and played your Startrek and you were both enthusiastic and helpful. Stern needs more people like you doing grassroots marketing.

I would assume whoever was complaining was doing more volume than you as this makes little to no sense otherwise. Stern should be embracing sales, not cutting them off

On that note, I am surprised by how many machines you've sold. A tip of the hat and congratulations are deserved

If they could do this to someone doing as well as Mana then they WILL do this to the other new distributors in Ontario and elsewhere as they build their success.

This rings similar to a story in Vaughan this month. A new food market named Olivers opened up around the Promenade Mall. They sell kosher food. They were gearing up for Passover sales when several food reps called and said they couldn’t fulfill his orders as they had heard from Sobeys that if they continued to sell to Olivers then Sobeys would discontinue their larger purchases. There was fiery feedback from the local community and calls to boycott the local Sobeys that had made the threats. Within a week Sobeys Head Office had stepped in to say they didn’t authorize such threats and made sure Olivers could continue to buy from the distributors. Sadly this already impacted their Passover sales but the larger damage was rectified.

Something similar may be needed here. If everyone truly wants more competition and better service through more options then reach out to Stern directly. Perhaps avoid any purchases of Stern machines until they change their position.

I get this will also affect the new distributors too but this will happen to you next so support the pause for your long term viability. The complaining distributor definitely won’t like this but they brought it on themselves.

The community in Southern Ontario will suffer greatly as a result of this. Jeff has been a staunch supporter of London Pinball and the Pinball Parlour at Forked River Brewing Company. The feedback I have received from my friends and customers has been overwhelmingly positive about Mana's service and the customer-first approach under which Jeff operates. This whole situation has been very sad to witness and has left me very bitter towards the big players and Stern. Crushing the little guy has never been good for consumers or for growing a community. Shame on Stern.

Really disappointed to hear that Mana Pinball is no longer a distributor for Stern Pinball. You've been an incredible presence in the community—knowledgeable, passionate, and always willing to go the extra mile. In a space that can sometimes feel transactional, you brought a level of authenticity and care that truly set you apart. You were a breath of fresh air and a real advocate for pinball fans. Wishing you nothing but success in what’s next. The community won’t forget what you brought to the table. Thank you

I heard thru the pinball community complaints came from Nitro. We should ALL boycott Nitro.
Oddly Nitro doesn't have much presence in Ontario. I heard they have a store in the Woodbine mall but I haven't heard a peep since.

Its very easy to order online from them.
They take all methods of payments.
Iphone is just 2 clicks of the button.

I wouldn’t call London local to the GTA. If you require local service in the GTA contact Nick Angel, he also sells pins.

Stern has too much control over Distros. Competition is a good thing. It makes things better for the community and also forces distros to provide exceptional service which Jeff did.

Very unfortunate that they did this. Since the sale of player one they haven't been the same and Mana was the go to choice in Ontario.

There is room for more than one. Nitro or whoever complained probably did not like seeing the success Mana was having and complained.

I understand Stern wanting to protect the longer established distros but by revoking a clearly successful distro just seems strange.

I am also going to send Stern an email.
