Yeah, 24" is the recommended but 18" is code. Just trench where you need the wire to go 24" down, lay the cable and backfill if the wire is not compromised anywhere.

What about the rest of the wire? I assume if that wasn't buried properly the rest of it most likely isn't either?

Also I was thinking for the repair, I would buy a small length of the same grade wire, strip both ends of the old and new, solder them together, use heat shrink tape on each of the new connections and then heat shrink on the entire new wire as well.

That sound sufficient?

Nope, once the wire has been compromised you either need to connect it back togher with an approved device like a marrette etc and enclose that in an accessable box (any AC wire that is connected together must be accessable at all times per code), or rip a whole new wire. If it was low voltage wire, you could repair it the way you suggested but not for AC.

Hmmmmmmmm, so obviously can't bury the box. So really I would have to add two boxes since I have to connect them on both sides

I don't think there is enough existing wire to restrip the ends, connect them and bury them. So I would have to have a box on both sides of the driveway I guess?

As long as I get an external/waterproof rated junction box I can just attach that to a 2x4 stake in the ground and run the wire up that and then back along under the ground right?

Day 4

Stone is in, he's moving too fast for me :)

I'm going to have to dig some of the stone out to get the wire in.

No updates really, nothing new has been done this week.

I put in the junction boxes for the wire that got ripped, between the junction box and the ground I just secured the wire to the 2x4 with those metal wire ties you hammer into the wood.

My excavator was saying that isn't code as you can't have external wires near the ground exposed like that so I need to run conduit from the ground to the junction box.

So that is what I will do next.

The rest of the building, as is the running theme, is tied up in government bureaucracy again. Zig from Viking is getting the building permit, which is submitted on Aug 19th, it was supposed to take 10 working days at the max to get the building permit.

Turns out, it's 10 working days after the zoning department approves it and the zoning department has apparently been picking it ass for the last 2 weeks cause they just approved it today.

So now the 10 day clock starts..... which is apparently the MAX it will take now which I'm sure they will use every single day of cause god forbid they do anything efficiently.

Finally have my building permit! So now there is nothing left in my way, everything from an approval process is done, now I just need to get my excavation guy back on site along with Zig from Viking and we can put in the foundation for the posts.

Hopefully this will all be starting up again this week.

I pickup the building permit from the town tomorrow

It's very surreal seeing it go up almost looks like a building!

Keep forgetting to update this thread.

Guys have been here every day this week working away, it's slow but steady progress.

My biggest issue now is electrical.

The pole that feeds my house is on my neighbors property, the plan was to add 2 new poles onto my property.

One that would be on my property so that we could redirect the line to that, and then another closer to the building. This would all be overhead wires obviously.

Problem is the line is currently underground, and where the new pole needs to go, there isn't enough slack before it heads under my driveway to redirect it to the new pole. so I'd have to tear up half my driveway to get at the line which I really don't want to do.

The other option is to run the line direct from the existing pole to the new pole I need to put up by the building. But in order to do that I would need to get my neighbor to agree to an easement since the line would have to run over a small portion of his property.

I plan to ask him if that is ok but have my friend looking into whats involved for an easement from the legal side. My worry is if he says no I don't really like option #2 at all.

Option 3 is to get a torpedo trench done, which I'm looking into as well, but I don't know if you go underground, do you still need an easement? I assume the underground trench would still have to cross my neighbors property as well.

I'll be happy when this thing is done, but right now with everything costing way more than expected, and everything taking way longer then expected, I really wish I hadn't started in the first place.
