I think it varies. I've purchased gold and sometimes have been pretty unimpressed with things like bad registration or being able to read woodgrain in the clearcoat. Other times it was awesome. Every batch is different and they probably just divide them into good, better and best.

Repro playfields have always been between $600-$800 USD and even more for especially rare or limited production ones such as TAF, Fathom, CC and so on. This is what I'm used to paying for CPR or Mirco. If I'm buying from an artist like Ron Kruzman, it's well over $1K USD

Beyond the cost of the playfield there is the work of doing the swap. Not an easy endeavor on a DMD. Plus you will invariably want to swap out some parts while you're doing all that work.... so plan on a few more bucks. So the real gauge of whether you should do it is how much do you love the game?
