Great pictures Mike,
We occasionally make it down to Detroit for some cross border shopping but tend to stay in the auburn hills area only. It's sad to see a once great city slowly decaying.

Notice some of the walls and ceilings ripped open for scavengers hunting for copper wires.

That is what happens when Americans don't support their own and buy American vehicles. The once booming auto industry accounted for 72% of Detroits income in the 1970's. Smaller profits forced local plants to shut down and some taken to Mexico for cheap labor.

I'm in Detroit every year for the auto show. The downtown core is worse than anything you would've imagined back in the day of regular car-jackings and muggings. At least there were people in the streets. Today, it's pretty much a ghost town.

On the bright side, Hollywood should really capitalize as these would make some great apocalyptic movie shoot locations.

Let's hope forces step in to turn things around.

Wow, I had no idea it'd gotten that bad down there. It's really the sort of thing that used to happen more with old single-industry towns, just on a much larger and more modern scale. When your entire economy is based on a product people don't want anymore, this is what happens I guess. Wonder how that compares to things, say, 5-10 years ago?

Even Buffalo's downtown core is a bit freaky. I tend to stick to the outlying areas when I head there. Some buildings are obviously abandoned...

This was the featured TED talk for today. There's some startling numbers, but their hopeful to rebuild Detroit.

Population is less then 740 000 people
Over 100 000 empty parcels of land, 20 square miles of vacant properties.
Only 27 jobs for every 100 people.

The product of a system focused on short term gains for the economic elite who view any sense of social responsibility as weakness.

It irks me how these same folks become philanthropists and divide their ill gotten gains in the way they see fit in order to redeem their souls like some perverted Robin Hood.

Glen, I think your comment pretty much sums up our entire global economy these days. Very sad and if it continues we're all in big trouble.

Oh, and if I haven't already mentioned it I highly recommend watching the BBC show "Requiem for Detroit".
